It will interest you to know that the birth of Wrist watches actually dated back to the 16th century Europe where watches evolved from portable spring-driven clocks that appeared in the 15th century.
However, the watch made during the 16th century to mid 20th was a mechanical device run by winding a mainspring which turned the gears and moved the hands thus, keeping time with a rotating balance wheel.
According to some studies, ‘Watch’ actually came from the Old English word woecce meaning ‘Watchman’ why? Because it was used by town watchmen to keep track of their shifts. Another interesting reveal is that this term also originated from the 17th century Sailors, who used the watch to time the length of their shipboard Watches (duty shifts).
From inception, Watches were worn almost exclusively by women, while men used pocket watches until the early 20th century. By the mid 19th century, Wristwatches were made or marketed as bracelets for women.
Wristwatches now come in various designs, colours, features and even price tag attached to it. Some still come like bracelets, others in steel, rubber or leather.
