Football stars have been seeing in the new year with loved ones and family across the globe, posting their celebrations to Instagram.
Ronaldo will have to go some to top a 2017 where he won the Champions League, La Liga, a fifth Ballon D’Or, and became a father to three more children.
Neymar used New Year to show his love for son Davi, this picture captioned ‘my best friend’
His former Barcelona team mate, Neymar, also used New Year’s Eve to demonstrate his love for family, posting a picture of him sat with his son Davi on a boat, captioned ‘my best friend’.
New Year’s Eve also saw team-mates come together, with Manchester City and Argentina colleagues Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero celebrating with their combined families.
Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic also kept family close, looking loved up in an embrace with his wife, Raquel Mauri.
Chelsea forward Eden Hazard also saw in the year with family, namely his three footballer brothers – Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Thorgan, Chelsea reserve Kylian, and his youngest sibling Ethan.
The Hazard quartet each posed with a numbered balloon, spelling 2018, while team-mate Alvaro Morata wore his own party prop – a pair of novelty, oversized, golden glasses.
Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho also celebrated the new year – ignoring newly increased speculation about a move to Barcelona, with Nike briefly offering Barca shirts with the Brazilian’s name on the back – taking a family snap with wife Aine and daughter Maria.
His team-mate, Roberto Firmino, saw in 2018 with partner Larissa Pereira, flashing his extraordinarily white teeth as they clinked glasses of champagne.
Also enjoying a hard-earned glass of fizz was Toni Duggan, the Barcelona and England striker sharing a picture on her Instagram, wearing a festive hat and blowing a party horn.
On the continent, there were some classy celebrations to say goodbye to 2017 – Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski standing by a pool wearing a tuxedo, wife Anna on his arm. Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas shared an arty black and white photo of him with his spouse, Sara Carbonero.
One player glad to say goodbye to 2017 is Leicester midfielder Adrien Silva. He is now finally able to play for the Foxes after his registration was submitted 14 seconds after the deadline in the summer.
Silva celebrated with his family, as did Everton’s Kevin Mirallas, wearing a fetching red jacket – appropriate for a man hoping to star for Belgium in the 2018 World Cup.
Besiktas and former Real Madrid defender Pepe also saw in the new year with friends and relativies – an entire party bus full of them.
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was rather more low key, taking a family snap with his wife, pop star Shakira, and their children Milan and Sasha.
Manchester City utility man Fabian Delph bucked the trend by posing alone in his New Year effort, save for silver balloons spelling 2018, as he wished everyone ‘good health and lots of happiness’.
Chelsea winger Pedro showed off his tasteful Christmas tree with a reserved picture, cosy with Carolina Martin, his wife.
Shkodran Mustafi used his Instagram celebration to not only pose with his wife and daughter – with London’s skyline in the background, but also list his 2017 achievements with Germany – winning the Confederations Cup and qualifying for Russia 2018.
There was a far more upbeat tempo to Andres Iniesta’s image – he and his family posing in party hats and colourful garlands.
Celebration with family was the theme for Bayern Munich midfielder James Rodriguez – with young daughter Salome – and PSG’s Angel Di Maria, who had a table full of guests for a New Year’s meal.
While many of the celebratory pictures began to blend into each other, Shinji Kagawa’s unusual effort stood out – he wished his followers Happy New Year while soaking in a hot tub.
The Xhaka brothers, Taulant and Arsenal star Granit, were more traditional, taking a picture with their family, including Granit’s new wife Leonita Lekaj.
Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke showed little heed of the New Year’s football by celebrating with a glass of wine and a well-stocked bar behind him.
No rest for the Premier League regulars, however – no alcohol in sight for Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who posed with wife Lais Moraes and daughter Yasmin.
There was no mistaking where West Ham target man Andy Carroll and girlfriend Billi Mucklow were at midnight – he shared a selfie taken with the London fireworks in the background.
No missing David Luiz either, the big-haired Chelsea defender showing off his outrageous outfit, topped off with a silver metallic tie.
However the theme of New Year 2018 was family, demonstrated by Franck Ribery and his sweet snap of him and his family dressed up for a night out.
