NPFL MD12 Review: Big wins for Kano Pillars and Rivers United
Matches were played across the length and breadth of the country on a super Sunday that featured two heavyweight clashes and an equal number of derbies.
Kano Pillars 3-1 Enyimba
Kano Pillars received Enyimba of Aba in a packed Sani Abacha Stadium. The crowds at Pillars home game must be commended and perhaps it was they (the 12th man) who powered Pillars to victory despite being a man down.
Kabiru Balogun opened scoring with a deflected freekick in the 24th minute and beat Afelokhai again in the 61st. Chukwude pulled one back for the Elephants from the penalty spot after former Enyimba skipper Udoji was sent off for a second bookable offence. Pillars were not deterred and held out till the 93rd minute when Gambo put the match beyond doubt.
Rivers United 1-0 Rangers FC
Esosa Igbinoba scored the only goal of the match in the very first minute to give Rivers all three points.
ABS 1-0 Katsina
Katsina United have been in good form this season but so have newly promoted ABS and they showed why they are surveying the league from the heady heights of 3rd.
A solitary goal from Babangida Chindo in the 24th minute settled the tie and keeps them third with a game in hand.
MFM 1-0 Remo Stars
Sikiru Olatunbosun stole the headlines last time out at the Agege Stadium with a breath-taking goal which has been voted the CNN goal of the week.
However it’s on the regularity of Stephen Odey’s goals that the Olukoya boys will hope to build a successful season and he did not disappoint on Sunday winning and converting a penalty to secure all three points.
Shooting Stars 1-1 Plateau United
Plateau continue their impressive form on the road this season with a point at the Lekan Salami Stadium. Ibeh scored from a long throw just before halftime but the home side responded from the penalty spot in the 70th minute through Ibrahim Adebayo to peg the league leaders back.
Lobi Stars 1-0 Gombe United
Anthony Okpotu presented Lobi a gift on his birthday with an early goal in the 9th minute to settle the tie.
FC Ifeanyi Uba 2-2 Abia Warriors
A clash of ‘Warriors’ lived up to its billing in Nnewi as the sides traded goals time and again in a thrilling match.
Adetunji gave the visitors the lead in the 19th minute, Ifeanyi Uba equalised through Stephen Eze in the 33rd and took the lead in the 65th through Osanga only to be pegged back by an equaliser from Chinedu Ozor in the 79th. Two all it ended at the Ifeanyi Uba sports complex.
Niger Tornadoes 2-0 Nasarawa United
The Tornadoes scored twice to beat Nasarawa at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja.
Musa Wakili got the opener from 12 yards out in the 27th minute and Odeyemi wrapped it up in the 60th.
Akwa United 1-0 El-Kanemi
Ibrahim Al Hassan got the only goal late in the match as Akwa United continue to move away from murky relegation waters.
Sunshine Stars 1-0 Wikki Tourists
Wikki Tourists slump continues unchecked with this latest defeat in Akure and they continue to miss Godwin Obaje’s goals as they were unable to find an equaliser under the rain in Ondo state.
Stephen Odey (MFM) 7
Victor Mbaoma (Remo) 6
Samuel Mathias (El-Kanemi) 6
