NPFL Review: Highlights from matchday 6
IfeanyiUbah compound Rangers woes, MFM blot out the Sunshine, Shooting deflate the Pride of Rivers, here are some talking points from matchday 6
Rangers’ woes continues
What has gone wrong for the Flying Antelopes? Their title defence has begun with a whimper and looks likely to die prematurely. Six matches in their scorecard contains two losses, three draws and a single win.
Could it be that complacency has crept in for the players, were their off-season activities in the transfer market adequate, so many questions…
Relief for Maikaba
Finally a first win for Akwa United and Maikaba. The Promise Keepers left it late against Remo Stars but they did the business.
It was Musa Newman on his home debut scoring the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute to get (new man) Abdu Maikaba his first win, you can’t beat that.
Shooting come to the party
Fatai Amoo needed to find some traction going into this match, a 2-1 victory over Rivers United certainly gives him some. Three points raises their tally to seven and provides some breathing room.
Sootin’ and Amoo’s collection of youngsters have collected a scalp to revel in, but any revelry must be short-lived as they travel to Wikki Tourists next. The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa stadium has been a fortress for the Tourists this season and they will need all their wits about them to take anything from Bauchi.
Wikki in withdrawal
Wikki Tourists look like a side in limbo since the departure of key duo Coach Maikaba and top scorer Godwin Obaje.
Their form on the road is nothing to write home about, they have lost all three away ties which is worrying given that they away to RSLAF (Sierra Leone) in their first CAF Confederations match on Friday, can they cure their travel sickness before that?
Stephen Odey is the man on fire for MFM, the striker’s goal contribution is at six this season -5 goals and an assist- and those goals are largely responsible for MFM’s closing the gap at the top to just one point.
MFM are no strangers to fast starts, they have the same number of points now as they had as this stage last season (13). They won four from their first six as they have this season but only won eight from the remaining thirty. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu must ensure an encore does not ensue.
