FIFA President guarantees two extra World Cup slots for Africa
FIFA President, Gianni Infantino has promised that Africa will at least seven slots in the expanded World Cup. He said this while speaking to members of the press during a one-day working visit to Ghana that includes a meeting with the country’s President Nana Akuffo-Addo
He said: “During my campaign I said there should be forty teams in the World Cup and that seven should be African teams. Others were not in agreement including this continent.
“Now we have increased the slots to not 40 but 48 and the African representation would be more than seven. The precise representation we are still working on it but it would be many more than currently.”
Infantino is visiting several FIFA Member Associations around the world to share ideas on his vision of developing the game across the globe.
The FIFA president’s promise of seven guaranteed slots is unlikely to impress members of CAF with some lobbying for ten slots when the expanded format kicks in.
