Reigning champion Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat in the Australian Open as Dennis Istomin, ranked #117, secured an improbable victory against the Serbian at the Rod Laver Arena.
Istomin made the vital break in the fifth game of the deciding set and held service to win a marathon match 7-6 (10/8) 5-7 2-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 in four hours and 48 minutes.
Wildcard Istomin has only one tour title to his name since going pro in 2004 and in winning served Djokovic his earliest exit from a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2008 when he was also knocked out in the 2nd round.
