NPFL Roundup: 4 Things We Learnt From MD2; Watch Out For Dark Horses Abia Warriors

FC IfeanyiUbah do know how to play football afterall and 3 things we learnt from Matchday 2 of the Nigerian Professional Football League;

Abia Warriors looking like the dark horses in the race

Abia are in the midst of an incredible run, unbeaten in their last eight NPFL ties, a run that stretches back six games into last season and includes away wins against Shooting Stars and champions Enugu Rangers, a home win against Enyimba and a draw with Rivers United away.

Unlikely as it may seem with those results, which should signal designs on the Nigerian crown, Warriors were actually mired in a relegation scrap and those results were the fuel for their great escape as they finished last season with 48 points just three points above the relegation zone.

However, just two matches into the season, the team are perhaps giving more weight to the results and in spectacular fashion too. Their 2-1 win over champions Rangers was the result of the first round, following up with a 2-0 victory  over NNL champions Katsina makes for two champion scalps and a feel-good atmosphere in Abia.

Okey Emordi, apppointed technical adviser at the end of last season, is an old hand at steering teams to success in Nigeria, a league winner with Enyimba, Kano Pillars, he is also one of two coaches in the league that have CAF Champions League titles on their CV. With the reins in his hands you should fancy Abia Warriors giving the favourites a run for their money.

FC IfeanyiUbah leave theatrics for the cinemas

MFM started the season like a house on fire but at the Ifeanyi Ubah Games Village in Nnewi they were doused quite convincingly. They leaked three first half goals and the MFM keeper became a casualty as he was hauled off in the 47th minute by coach Fidelis Ilechukwu who was predictably was not happy with what he saw.

And so FC IfeanyiUbah have lift-off, after an abortive launch in Kano on Saturday, fueled by goals from Ifeanyi Onuigbo, Yaya Kone, King Osanga and Jimoh Oni.

Rivers United turn a new leaf

If there was anything that stopped the Pride of Rivers from sailing to a first NPFL title in their first ever season last year it was a terrible away record. At one point, they went ten matches without an away goal, they lost nine of those, managing a draw with Enyimba. Enyimba played all their home fixtures at the Yakubu Gowon stadium in Rivers State as some work was being done on their Aba ground, so that draw does not count for much as it was hardly an away tie. Stanley Eguma will no doubt be pleased that his boys have turned a new leaf.

Sunshine win bragging rights in Western derby

Sunshine stars have drawn first blood in their first clash with fierce rivals Shooting Stars courtesy of a solitary goal from Sunday Oluwadamilare in the 78th minute. It had looked for long stretches like the away side might shut them out with the 3SC keeper in particular having a good game, frustration had begun to creep in for Sunshine after Sikiru had a goal struck out for offside 15 minutes earlier, but they eventually got the goal to claim bragging rights in this fierce derby. However, if recent history is anything to go by it will be short-lived.
