Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi is set to become the Chinese Super League’s latest star addition following in steps of Oscar and Ramires who recently swapped the London side for China in mega deals.
According to media outlet Daily Mail, the Nigeria is due for a medical with Tianjin TEDA on Thursday in preparation for a deal that could see Mikel take home a weekly wage of a hundred and forty thousand pounds which would represent a hundred percent increment on his Chelsea wages.
The Nigeria international had been subject to interest from a number of clubs including Valencia, Marseille, and Internazionale with Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr preferring a European option.
“I prefer Mikel stays in Europe and play in a European team. When I was in London two weeks ago, we spoke about that. But Mikel is an experienced and intelligent player and he knows what to do,” revealed Rohr at a parley with sports journalists in Lagos on Wednesday.
He, however, stressed that Nigerians will need to respect Mikel’s choice if China is his first option.
“If he decides to choose the money of China then we must respect that. If he goes to China and is playing well, I have no problem with that,” the Eagles supremo observed.
Mikel has won 10 major trophies in 11 years with Chelsea but has not got a look in since new boss Antonio Conte arrived in the summer.
