Book Review: Easy Motion Tourist

Title: Easy Motion Tourist

Genre: Crime Fiction

Author: Leye Adenle

ISBN: 978-1-911115-06-9

In this debut novel, Leye Adenle takes us on a journey through the city of Lagos with his vivid descriptive prowess.
Easy Motion Tourist, chronicles the crime life in the city of Lagos from prostitution to theft, gang rivalry, ritual killing etc. Leye in this book somewhat makes us question if it was his street credibility that fed his imagination while writing this book or if the story was spurred by real life events.
Guy Collins visits Nigeria to cover the upcoming elections with the hope of proving himself a credible journalist and proving himself to his ex-girlfriend. Little did he know of the adventure he was in for when he got arrested and met the fiery Amaka. Amaka who is like a Robin Hood for prostitutes in the city is on the verge of exposing a syndicate involved in using body parts for ritual purposes and involves Guy, believing he may be the key to the puzzle she was trying to solve. Together they discover that the body parts are being trafficked for organ transplant.

Book Review: Men Of The South

The story is told from multiple points if view but majorly from one narrative. From Guy’s naïve viewpoint, we connect entirely to him and follow him through his confused and exhilarating phases.
Easy Motion Tourist offers us an assessment of the dynamics in Nigeria as it relates to crime, the police force, and social classification.

The Nigerian Police was portrayed as a national challenge. We see it as a menace, and we are left to wonder if their true loyalty lies with the people they are meant to protect or with the rich who fills their pocket with coins.

The author made us connect with the plight of the young girls engaging in prostitution and the victims of various crimes depicted in the book with vivid imagery. After reading Sarah House, I have come to understand that the underworld of the prostitution is dark and savagery.
I like how the author gave us a background story to the characters. This gave us an insight to understand the characters better.

Book Review: On Becoming

I, however, wished the author gave more life to the budding romance between Guy and Amaka. The last struggle between, Guy, Chief Amadi and the secret detective seemed to me a bit tad too convenient but I still have to once again applaud the imagery employed.

Easy Motion Tourist is a compelling thriller that is fast-paced. Once I picked it up, it was difficult for me to drop it. I personally do not like books that have sequels but I found myself looking forward to the sequel.
