AFCON 2017: Senegal & Mane First To Book Quarterfinal Spot
A goal a piece from Sadio Mane and Henri Saivet gave Senegal a two nil win over Zimbabwe and with six points from two matches, the Teranga Lions are the first team to make it to the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
The goals came early for Aliou Cisse’s men, Mane’s in the 9th while Saivet scored off a freekick in the 13th minute, and they should have had more but for the heroics of Tatenda Mukuruva in goal.
They spent most of the first half runnings rings round a befuddled Zimbabwe, then soft pedalled in the second choosing instead to hold their lead.
Senegal are hot favorites to win, qualifying unbeaten as they did and with a strong playing contingent including the likes of Liverpool’s Mane, Kouyate of West Ham, Egerton’s Idrissa Gueye, Koulibaly, Diouf and co.
Coach Aliou Cisse, one of four African gaffers at the tournament, can now rest easy in their final group B match with Algeria, even if they lose and their closest rivals win, they have the advantage of a superior goal difference.
