We’ll get to the ‘news’ of Ronaldo winning the Ballon d’Or, however in more newsy (is that a word?) news Rivers United Football Club of Port Harcourt are the 2016 NPFL Super4 champions!
Rivers United are Super4 Chapmpions
They secured the title on the last matchday beating Wikki Tourists by a goal to nothing to finish with six points while fellow contenders Rangers FC fell at the last hurdle with a one all draw against FC IfeanyiUbah.
And so the curtain raiser for the 2016/2017 NPFL season is done and dusted and the season can begin. The draws for the fixtures have been done and the first round threw up some interesting ties, the standout being FC IfeanyiUbah’s trip to Kano Pillars. FCIU will travel to this one with a new manager, Ghanian Yaw Preko, in charge after Kenichi Yatsuhashi was fired just 2 games into his tenure, talk about trigger fingers eh.
|Roman who? There’s a new billionaire owner in town, Ifeanyi Ubah take a bow
Mahrez crowned BBC African Footballer of the Year
|Mahrez was the key component in Leicester’s spectacular run to the title last season.
A relieved Riyadh Mahrez wrapped his hands around his award on Monday. It’s a good thing the year did not begin in August because the Mahrez of this season only serves to magnify the scope of Leicester’s Premier League win, but on the face of things the voting for the AFPoTY has probably not been this straight forward in a while and there’s no one more deserving of the win.

Quiet. Get out your tin foil hats, quick! Conspiracy theory time. But seriously though how unlucky is Arsenal? After crashing out of the UCL in the round of 16 for six years running, there was a feeling of optimism in the air when they topped their group for the first time in five years. Usually topping the group means getting a “lesser light” team who finished second in theirs, just one problem Real Madrid, Bayern finished 2nd and between them have won 3 of the last 4 editions, but surely Arsenal would get lucky this time, they had to…poor sods.
Benfica v Borussia Dortmund
Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid
Sevilla v Leicester
And as if that’s not enough;
Arsenal will play Chelsea, Bayern, Liverpool and Southampton all away in space of 6 games in Feb-Mar. #afc

Well finally we get to the Ballon d’Or and in a stunning development in France on Monday night young hotshot Antoine Griezmann pipped Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award! Seriously! You don’t believe me? Well you shouldn’t the Ronaldo-Messi duopoly continued apace as the Portuguese edged his Argentinean rival to a fourth Ballon d’Or award. Its things like this that make you thank God for FIFA’s The Best awards surely there are some other footballers who play football somewhere on the planet.
How to watch football today;
Bournemouth (12th) v Leicester (14th) 8.45pm
Everton (9th) v Arsenal (2nd) 8.45pm
In other news the Super sand will begin their campaign to reach the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in the Bahamas today against Egypt in Group A at the CAF qualification series in Lagos. They’ll be hoping for better luck after losing the Copa Lagos title to Switzerland on Sunday.
|Perhaps they should get D’Banj, he certainly knows how to give his team a ‘fighting chance’
And in other other news, Wilfred Ndidi’s stock keeps rising, Leicester in January? We’ll see.
