Controversy Trails Rivers Rerun

Controversies have trailed the December 10 legislative re-run elections for Rivers State. The Independent National Electoral Commissioner, INEC had hoped that the election would be the final conclusion for the one it began on March 19.
However allegations of massive rigging and electoral violence have trailed the election just like it did the last time, a local radio in Port Harcourt, reports.
Despite announcement of election results by some returning officers in areas where elections held on Saturday, INEC is yet to officially release the final results, Nigeria Info FM in Port Harcourt, has reported.
“Journalists waited at the commission’s office hoping INEC would confirm those results announced by the returning officers, but this did not happen, instead, INEC Commissioner for South-South Zone, Mustapha Lecky told newsmen that the results were declared by the returning officers at the constituency levels without giving details”,  it said.
“But recalling what happened in the last elections where some of the results announced by the returning officers were not authenticated, this made it difficult to say who the real winners are without INEC officially announcing the results”, it added.
The Returning Officer for Rivers South East senatorial district declared Senator Magnus Abe. Some other results were also announced in other areas.
Some of those results announced by the returning officers have not been accepted by the PDP.

The chairman of the party in Rivers State, Felix Obuah in a statement signed by his media aide, Jerry Needam said that the party rejects the declaration of Magnus Abe and other APC candidates in South East Senatorial District as winners of Saturday’s rerun elections.

Mr. Obuah insisted that there was no election in the area and called on party members to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that the declaration of the fake results would not stand.
Meanwhile; Governor Nyesom Wike has called on INEC to release the results of Rivers East Senatorial District and Rivers West Senatorial District without tampering with it. Governor Wike in an interview with newsmen in Portharcourt declared that the candidates of the PDP had already won both elections based on results from polling units.
The governor also called on INEC to immediately release the results of Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency and Andoni State Constituency, which he claimed the PDP had won.
He pointed out that never in the history of elections has Rivers East Senatorial District result declaration exceeded 24hours.
According to him INEC, the Army and the Police have plotted to manipulate the results of Emohua and Ikwerre Local Government Areas for the purpose of concocting the senatorial results in favor of the APC.

INEC, the Army and the Police have always maintained that they are not partisan in the Rivers Re-run election.
